Book Review: This Bowl of Stars by Tamara Cruz

Book Title: This Bowl Full of Stars (Goodreads)
Author: Tamaya Cruz
Rating: 5/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This book caught my eye because its description talked about cultural anthropology, the topic of my bachelor's degree. Anthropology gave me an eye-opening way of looking at my world, full of the deeper meaning of human interactions, and this book did exactly that. It layered themes of love, fear, and power through New Mexico folktales over the main character's story of growth. The depth and complexity is beyond most romances I read, making this story every bit as much of a legend as the love story of Max and Carina.

This Bowl Full of Stars follows researcher and professor Ali Moreno in her research on a tale of love that led many treasure hunters to search all through New Mexico looking for secret buried treasure. While Ali herself doesn't believe in love, she begins to question this as she goes on her own adventure trying to substantiate the tale. Is she hunting for it to prove it's wrong and love does not exist, or because she secretly wants to know if she should open up her heart because love stories do exist?

Since there was a lot of adventure and mystery elements, I wasn't quite expecting the amount of spice. I do think some of the romantic elements had to suffer a little to make more room to talk about the treasure hunt. Especially her connection to Luke, which I didn't quite understand, and expected her to be much more dominant throughout their interactions.

I appreciated the Spanish words sprinkled throughout. Each had an immediate English translation, so I never had to remove myself from the story to look them up, which I appreciated. It really gave a lot of flavor to the whole book, and made it easier for me to remember the New Mexico setting. I am normally an audiobook listener, and found myself wishing I was listening to this book too.

One of my most memorable books this year so far. This book is for those who want more action in their romances. Will be recommending this a lot!

Some legends last forever.

Sixty years ago, the southwest’s greatest romance ignited a legend that started with a broken heart and ended with gold coins buried in the heart of the desert. Every treasure hunter under the wide, blue sky has tried to find it. No one has been successful.

Until now.

Anthropologist Ali Moreno has built a career explaining why people do the things they do, and she’s sure the idea of true love is just a fairy tale. But when a stranger shows up in her office with a map to the treasure no one has ever seen, Ali finds herself wanting to believe.

Finding the coins would prove to the world the legend was true. And it would prove to her heart love was possible.
With sexy guide Luke, she sets out on an adventure that could make her career, though every twist through the sagebrush seems to lead to Nico, a photographer that seems so familiar she’s sure she’s seen him before.

But Luke and Nico have their own history fueled by a past of betrayal, and a million dollar find means Ali doesn’t know who to trust. She must figure out what she really wants in order to get to the gold. And when she decides, she finds herself becoming the final chapter in the legend.
